Deceptive advertising has got to be one of the biggest turnoff's for me
when I am looking to do business with a company. When a company feels
the need to use advertising that is very misleading is usually the sign
of a scam. For example, recently I had seen work from home ad's from a
company called CDF Travel or CDA Consulting which is a timeshare
company. They hire people to work as independent contractors making
outbound calls and taking inbound calls trying to get people to sign up
for a timeshare presentation. As an incentive they will give
participants of this presentation gifts such as electronic devices, gift
cards, etc.
Whenever I find a potential lead to put up on my work at home website http://www.twothousandmonthly.com I investigate it first. When I put CDF Travel into a search engine one of the first things that came up was a report on them from the BBB here. They were talking about how this company sends out these postcards to individuals making it look like they have a package that needs to be picked up. They give an 800 number to call and a reference number. Once you call in it is the reps who they hire job to get you to take the tour.
I am not sure if they are still using this method or not but that is a very deceptive method of advertising. I am not an attorney but I do not believe that this is illegal either. As everyone should know though just because it is legal doesn't mean it is ethical. This is a way to get people to call in however they will be very angry when they find out all you wanted to do is pitch them a timeshare presentation. This company is not the only one that does this type of advertising. There are plenty of timeshare companies that do similar things to get peoples attention.
Another type of deceptive advertising is business opportunities. I am talking about mostly MLM and referral marketing opportunities. For example, to find jobs to put on my website I search through websites for keywords such as inbound calls from home. Whenever I search those keywords 90% of those ad's are the same referral marketing system out there. A lot of those titles to the ad's will be "Inbound calls from home" or something very similar.
The whole justification of that title is because when you post ad's you will receiving calls from people interested in signing up for the services. What they do not tell you is that it is going to be A LOT harder then they make it seem. You need to spend the day posting ad's all over the web unless you want to hire a service to do that for you for a large sum of money. Craigslist filters are very good so your ad will most likely be flagged off of their in no time. The other free online classified sites I haven't had much luck with. So basically you will spend at least 80% of your time posting ad's and the other 20% or less taking calls. No way is that "just taking inbound calls".
So for all of you that are involved in some type of job where you need to be deceptive when you advertise GET OUT OF THE JOB! There is nothing wrong with a catchy title but when you need to tell people false information then something is seriously wrong.
